Topic – Spoken English classes (parts of speech) Overview – This session was conducted by Yasmeen M, M.A., M.Ed., an Assistant Teacher at the Govt. High School Shri.S R Bommai,Gokul Hubli. During this session, she taught the children the different types of verbs as part of English grammar that would help them to communicate in English. The following was covered as a part of the session - A Verb is a word used to express an action or a state;as ⮚ Anu writes a letter. ⮚ Salt dissolves in water. ⮚ Raju is eating ice cream. ⮚ He is a farmer. ⮚ It is a leather bag. TYPES OF VERBS There are two kinds of Verbs. They are following. 1. Finite Verbs 2 .Non-Finite Verbs 1.FINITE VERBS Finite verbs are limited by the rules of number, person, gender, and tense. They change according to the number and the person of a subject. ⮚ I go to school. ⮚ We are going to school. FORMS OF FINITE VERBS MAIN VERBS: These Verbs can express their meaning with or without helping verbs. ⮚ Sam sings melodiously. ⮚ Sam is singing a song. AUXILIARIES: The words which are used to help main verbs are called Auxiliaries/ helping verbs. ⮚ Ravi was reading a novel. ⮚ The boys are playing in the playground. • REGULAR VERBS – Regular verbs form their past tense and past participle by adding ‘ed’
• IRREGULAR VERBS – Irregular verbs form their past tense and past participle differently.
